Forests in Punjab

Punjab, located in northern India, is primarily an agricultural state known for its fertile land and extensive agricultural practices. While the state is not traditionally known for its forests, it does have some forested areas and wildlife reserves. 

The recorded forest area in the Punjab is 3,084sq.Km which is 6.12% of the geographical area of the state. Reserved Forests constitute 1.43%, Protected Forests 36.87% and the Unclassed Forests constitute 61.7%.
District-wise Forest Area Intensity:

1. Hoshiarpur(34%)

1. Ropar(24%)

1. Nawanshahr(15%)

1. Gurdaspur(10%)

These 4 districts have Siwalik Hills, high rainfall, numerous seasonal streams(choes), much land unsuitable for cultivation and maximum soil moisture storage capacity.

• The central districts namely Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Patiala have moderately low forest area intensity.

• The south-western Punjab plain districts namely Sangrur, Moga, Faridkot, Bathinda, Mansa, Muktsar, Fazilka and Ferozepur have low forest area intensity(below 2%).
