The SGPC (Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee) is an organization that manages the gurdwaras (Sikh places of worship) in the Indian state of Punjab, as well as in some other parts of India. It is the apex body of the Sikhs and is responsible for the maintenance and management of historic gurdwaras, as well as for promoting Sikh religious and cultural activities.
The SGPC was established in 1920 as a result of the Gurdwara Reform Movement, which aimed to free the management of gurdwaras from the control of corrupt mahants (priests). The organization was formally recognized by the Sikh Gurdwaras Act of 1925, which gave it legal authority to administer the gurdwaras.
The SGPC is governed by an executive committee elected by the Sikh community through general elections held every five years. The committee consists of elected representatives from various districts in Punjab. The president and other office bearers are chosen from among the elected members of the executive committee.
The SGPC's main functions include managing the financial affairs of gurdwaras, organizing religious ceremonies and events, promoting Sikh education, and representing the Sikh community in various forums. It also runs educational institutions, hospitals, and charitable organizations for the welfare of the Sikh community.
The SGPC has played a significant role in Sikh religious and political affairs in India. It has been involved in various issues concerning the Sikh community, including matters related to Sikh identity, the protection of Sikh religious sites, and advocating for the rights of Sikhs.
